Angelina Jolie’s decision to have a bilateral prophylactic mastectomy to prevent breast cancer has been all over the media.  In the midst of that attention, a story broke through about a 53-year-old British man who underwent a prostatectomy after testing positive for a BRCA mutation.

Gene mutations increase the risk for a number of cancers, including prostate cancer.  Performing a so-called prophylactic prostatectomy because the man is a carrier of the BRCA gene is considered radical and not enough data is available to support any breakthrough benefits of a step forward.
