To improve patient comfort, and reduce anxiety associated with urological procedures, Dr. Gary Bellman now offers Nitrous Oxide at the Southern California Urology Institute.

Nitrous Oxide

WHAT IS NITROUS OXIDE?

You’ve most likely heard of Nitrous Oxide by its informal name, “laughing gas.” Used for decades in dental offices, and during labor and delivery, Nitrous Oxide is now available as a safe way to sedate, but not anesthetize, patients who are undergoing delicate urological procedures. Nitrous Oxide is an inhalable gas, comprised of 50% N2O and 50% O2. This makes Nitrous Oxide an effective analgesic (pain reliever), that takes effect within seconds, but doesn’t have lasting side effects.

BENEFITS OF NITROUS OXIDE FOR UROLOGY PATIENTS

Nitrous Oxide puts patients in control. The gas is self-administered, and takes effect immediately, alleviating anxiety, and preventing the sensation of pain. Because anxiety tends to increase pain, and pain tends to increase anxiety, the use of Nitrous Oxide makes perfect sense because it reduces both. The dose, and timing are closely monitored by the physicians, so there is no risk of overdoing it, but the patient is granted control to administer according to their needs.

Because Nitrous Oxide is fast acting, with a short duration of effect, it is also metabolized very quickly, (thus “out of your system” within minutes). In fact, the sedation and pain-relieving qualities are gone so quickly that patients feel normal almost immediately after discontinuing use. As such, patients are able to drive themselves home from procedures.

Other benefits of Nitrous Oxide for urological procedures include the non-addictive nature of the gas, and the ease of use. Using Nitrous Oxide also allows patients to forgo other types of local anesthesia or pain relievers, and it may be used for the duration of the urological procedure.

Nitrous Oxide is also 100% non-invasive (administered by simply inhaling from a tube). It is completely colorless and odorless.
