PROSTATE BIOPSIES

If other tests and symptoms indicate there may be a problem with your prostate gland, men may be referred for a prostate biopsy. Prostate biopsies are the best test for diagnosing prostate cancer.

WHAT IS A PROSTATE BIOPSY?

A prostate biopsy may be performed in a few different ways, but all have the same goal: to remove a small tissue sample to look for cancer. The prostate biopsy uses a needle to remove prostate tissue. There are three methods of obtaining prostate tissue:

  • Perineal Method
This is done through the area between the rectum and the scrotum.
  • Transurethral Method
Using a cystoscope, this biopsy is performed through the urethra.
  • Transrectal Method
This is the most common method and is performed through the rectum.

DO I NEED A PROSTATE BIOPSY?

A prostate biopsy will be recommended if lumps or abnormalities are discovered during a digital rectal exam. It may also be performed if you have elevated PSA levels, or if you’ve had a previous biopsy.

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER A PROSTATE BIOPSY

Your tissue sample will be evaluated by a specialist, to look for cancer cells. You will receive a pathology report which will include the results of the cancer screening. If cancer is detected, an estimate of how aggressive the cancer is may be provided. The report may also include information regarding abnormal, but noncancerous findings.
