PROSTATE EXAM?
The dreaded prostate exam- is it really necessary? If so at what age?
The prostate exam or a DRE (digital rectal exam) is where a physician examines the prostate by placing a finger in the rectum. The purpose to to make sure the prostate doesn’t feel too hard or lumpy. That may suggest the presence of a tumor or cancer.
The American Urological Association (AUA) the largest nation’s urology group, recommends it be done annually in men over the age of 40 years old.
Men should get an annual blood test (PSA) and an exam and consider a biopsy if either are abnormal.
