UNDERSTANDING THE NEW PSA TEST GUIDELINES
The American Urological Association (AUA) has issued a new prostate cancer screening. The new prostate-specific antigen (PSA) calls for routine screening of men between the ages of 55-69. The guidelines do allow for earlier or later PSA testing if certain cases include risk factors.
The driving risk factors for prostate cancer include- obesity; excess weight, a family history of prostate cancer, and the African American population. It’s easy to see that a large majority of American men fall into at least one of these categories, many with more than one risk factor. Early diagnosis and treatment can prevent prostate cancer metastasis.
Risk of prostate cancer increases greatly by the age of 65. To be proactive, men in this age bracket should be screened. These men have the best opportunity for early detection and treatment to eliminate their prostate cancer with optimal quality of life.
With any treatment and testing with this matter, Dr. Bellman is exceedingly knowledgeable and can help each man decide what’s best for them.
