MARCH MADNESS: IN IT TO WIN IT? PROTECT YOUR #1 SEED

No-needle, no-scalpel vasectomieshave been gaining in popularity for the last decade as the birth control of choice for thousands of men in Southern California. But during College Basketball Playoff season, there is a noticeable uptick in vasectomy scheduling at the Southern California Urology Institute.

Dr. Gary Bellman, founder of the SoCal Urology Institute with offices in West Hills, Tarzana and Thousand Oaks, has performed thousands of no-needle no-scalpel vasectomies. He explains why many men ‘time’ their vasectomy procedure to coincide with March Madness. “Although the no-needle, no-scalpel vasectomies require less recovery time, than vasectomies performed decades ago, there is still a necessary period of rest and recovery that men need. While recovering they might as well be watching their brackets and the games.”

Studies have confirmed that vasectomies during March Madness do increase, nationwide. One study, conducted by Athenahealth and reported on WebMD.com found that during the first week of March Madness, vasectomies for many urologists increase by 30%. The Cleveland Clinic suggests the increase is closer to 20%, per the New York Post, but both clearly shows a significant increase.

No-needle, no-scalpel vasectomies can be performed in a shorter time period, with men able to choose whether they would like intravenous sedation, general anesthetic, or a topical anesthetic. Either way, there is no needle used to give a shot in the genital region, nor is a scalpel used to expose and ultimately sever the vas deferens.

Benefits of No-Needle, No Scalpel Vasectomy

When compared to a traditional vasectomy, no-needle, no-scalpel vasectomies performed by Dr. Bellman at the SoCal Urology Institute have significant benefits. For example, in a traditional vasectomy one or two cuts were made with a scalpel, in the skin of the scrotum. From there the vas deferens would be cut, with the ends tied or clipped, and the incisions would be sewn up. These incisions immediately put men at greater risk for infection, as any incision has the potential to be infected. In addition, the cuts and stitches increased the risks of developing swelling, bruising, and even epididymitis.

By contrast, the no-needle, no-scalpel vasectomy procedure offered by Dr. Bellman, uses a tiny puncture in the scrotum, rather than any incisions. This in and of itself reduces the risk of infection, as the tiny puncture doesn’t even require stitches. This helps reduce swelling and bruising, not to mention virtually eliminating pain.

The Importance of Rest After a Vasectomy

Because many men have no pain following the procedure, some have been known to ignore the period of rest and recovery suggested by their urologist. Yet even though vasectomies are now a minor procedure, it is important to rest, and allow your body to heal. For some men, using that recovery time to follow their favorite college teams compete in March Madness, only makes sense.
