WOMEN’S HEALTH SERVICES

Women’s urology services at the Southern California Institute of Urology include treatment for common conditions such as blood in the urine (hematuria) and kidney stones. Hematuria and kidney stones are relatively common in both men and women, and Dr. Gary Bellman has decades of expertise in accurately diagnosing and treating both conditions. Here’s what to know about treatment for blood in the urine and kidney stones at the SoCal Urology Institute.

WHAT CAUSES BLOOD IN WOMEN’S URINE?

Seeing blood in your urine can be a bit jarring. However, it’s more common than you think. That said, any time you find blood in your urine (a condition known as hematuria), you should see a physician. Although blood in the urine may be a sign of an easily treatable, common infection, it may also be a symptom of a more serious condition.

BLOOD IN WOMEN’S URINE CAUSE: URINARY TRACT INFECTION

A common cause of blood in the urine in women is a urinary tract infection (UTI). At least 40% of women will develop a UTI at some point in their life, with some women experiencing them multiple times. UTIs generally respond well to simple antibiotic treatment.

BLOOD IN WOMEN’S URINE CAUSE: BLADDER INFECTION

A bladder infection is actually a type of UTI, and it may also lead to hematuria. In addition to noticing a pink or reddish tone in your urine, you may also experience burning or pain when urinating. Bladder infections are caused by bacteria, and therefore often respond well to a simple course of antibiotic treatment.

BLOOD IN WOMEN’S URINE CAUSE: KIDNEY INFECTION

A kidney infection is also a type of UTI. It occurs when bacteria or viruses cause an infection. A kidney infection often begins as a bladder infection, which spreads to the kidneys. Finding blood in your urine is one symptom of a kidney infection, although you’re liable to experience other symptoms as well, including back pain, fever/chills, pain in your low back, groin, or side, upset stomach or nausea, and/or a loss of appetite.

KIDNEY STONE TREATMENT FOR WOMEN

Although kidney stones are more common in men than in women, many women may experience kidney stones in their lifetime. Kidney stones can be incredibly painful, which is why early diagnosis is so important. Symptoms of kidney stones in women include:

  • Foul-smelling urine
  • Cloudy urine
  • Blood in urine
  • Problems with urine flow
  • Fever/chills
  • Nausea and/or vomiting
  • Abdominal pain
  • Groin pain
  • Low back pain
